ZLB Behring Foundation Appoints New Members to Board of Directors

The ZLB Behring Foundation for Research and Advancement of Patient Health today announced the appointment of two new board members, Dr. Leonard A. Valentino of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and Beatrice Young Pierce, RN, MSN, a bleeding disorders advocate in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Both appointees will play a significant role in the selection of Foundation grant recipients.

Governed by an independent Advisory Council that has the sole authority to award grants, the ZLB Behring Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to charitable, scientific and educational purposes that advance the standard of care for persons affected by bleeding disorders such as hemophilia and von Willebrand Disease.

"The decades of leadership and commitment to the bleeding disorders community that Dr. Valentino and Mrs. Pierce bring will certainly add value, strength and depth to our organization."

Dr. Valentino brings clinical expertise to the Foundation with nearly 20 years of experience and research in the bleeding disorders community. A graduate of Creighton University Medical School, Dr. Valentino is board certified in pediatrics and hematology/oncology and practices at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. His clinical and research interests include hemophilia, bleeding disorders, thrombosis and platelet disorders. Throughout his career, he has received various honors and awards, such as the Mead Johnson Award in recognition of teaching excellence and the William A. Albano Award in outstanding student research. He is also a member of several professional societies, including the American Society of Hematology, Metastasis Research Society, National Hemophilia Foundation, and World Federation of Haemophilia.

As the wife of an individual with severe Factor VIII hemophilia, Beatrice Young Pierce RN, MSN, has a personal interest in and passion for the advancement in treatment of bleeding disorders. Pierce has volunteered in the hemophilia community at local, regional and national levels for over 20 years. Through the National Hemophilia Foundation alone, she has served on several committees and held positions including co-chair of the Blood Safety Working Group; co-chair of the Annual Meeting Working Group; chair of the Education Committee; and vice-chair of the Board of Directors. Pierce has also served on two U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Advisory Committees.
